where we set up shop

the thing about the sun rising
later and later into the day
this time of year is that
this morning i woke and watched the birdshadows
on the thin closed curtains
made by the streetlight still on
while the morning birds flit
about the homemade feeder
danging from the dead sunflower
outside the front window
the weird backpack hug
(you try it: let your backpack straps slump down to your elbows
and then reach out to hug people)
that i give annie
and amy
and pelle
in ‘s living room
where we set up shop for tomorrow’s pop-up

the brightness like a slice
like stabs
scattered across the inky sky
(half moon. stars.)
asĀ  we head deep into the darkest
part of the year
