thank you for making us brave

thank you for making us brave the woman who showed us the steep path down to the river says

on behalf of her and her son and her dog and her friend

thank you for guiding us i respond

while drunken flotillas of innertubes and rafts buoy past

some in the shape of flamingos and unicorns and some taking the more humble forms

of an air mattress

the trees rising unbelievably tall around us and the water

glimmering unbelievably diamond-like

in the afternoon sun
