because of the light

how, because of the light
across the way momentarily going out,
the shadow and light of moon
on this clearsky night
lay themselves on the sidewalk outside
the back door
which i step through to stand
in the moonspilled night

_______

a platebowl piled
with avocado rolls that jan sets
on the table while i
dine on an early dinner salad
plus quesadilla
accompanied by a newspaper
opened to a page featuring an article
about how china
in the last year
is reversing it’s mandatory 1-child law
