the thinness

the day joseph rips his fingernail off
and some skin
from touching
the fan belt
while the car is running
_______

stan and i in the kitchen
laughing at my approach of tossing
deposit slips onto the floor
_______
the exquisite thinness and sweetness
of the cookie-cuttered cookies
(some with orange zest, some with toasted hazelnuts,
some with crunchy shugar sprinkled on top)
placed on a plate by the tree
_______

on the round braided rug
how we poise ourselves
to slap the slam-wich cards
when we see a double
or a thief
or a sandwich apear
