in the fortsythia
binoculars dangling from
my neck and a bottle of bubbles
in my hand

carrying clover sprout
with a bubble resting on top
which trish blows off while it remains
whole

me asking emory how to hold/throw a
throwing star as we stand facing the board
with a target drawn on it leaning up against
the horse barn
you’ve got better aim and i’ve got better speed he says
and with our skills combined i say
we’d make the best throwing star force ever

so green i say while we pond float
in the canoe
emory with his bullfrog catching net and me with
the old paddle headed towards
the south shore where everything
is bursting into new growth
against drizzle-gray sky

sound of drizzle-mist on plastic
greenhouse roof where baigz drops
winter squash seeds into just-pressed soil blocks and i
failingly attempt to use em’s metal detector
to find the drill bits that jumped ship
as the knox college student
whose name i can’t remember
but whose open face and soft quietness
i do
took down the winterizing
a week ago

i’ve got a scar everywhere emory says
as he changes from (figure-head
falling into pond from canoe) wet to dry
from thorns and scratches and blades and scrapes
his voice drifting out from his room

(where one can follow the wet footprints
to find him) to me on the lookfar porch where
i stand catching a red-headed woodpecker
through the binoculars

from the texas inspection
they call me the rain man he says

distance is a powerful aphrodisiac

where i can hear frogs in the background
that sound the same as our frogs
(spring peepers, tree frogs and
the ones that sound like running your finger
along the teeth of a comb)
