ice cubed and effervescent

breakfast of biscuits and
alline’s jam (rhubarb and berry) and
special-for-the-vegetarians mushroom gravy
and mini egg scramble/bakes
(in muffin pans)
plus slices of cantaloupe of the perfect ripeness

people aren’t happy i say
but it’s not really happiness i mean
but something more like contentment
and a sort of breathing-through
the choppy waves and unexpected/undelightful surprises

instant convergance
on two twin beds
where farm-to-village gossip ensues
and i joke about all the scandalousness
regaling trish and tyler with tall tales of
a late night round robin

heading westward
on the mowed path
moving through prairie to treeline to more prairie and more treeline
the cool magic of entering a forest
even if it is
only a strip

we place our glasses of
ginger fruit beer soda (water kefir)
part-way down the bed
so that when we arrive there
(after pulling up a third of the garlic)we sip on the ice cubed and effervescent coolness

princess and i talk portland
the economy of time
how infrastructure makes a difference when
it comes to bikeableness
the territorial laws of the 1840s dictating the expulsion
of blacks, and the state constitution that similarly
prohibited african americans from residence
and the repealing of this provision that finally came
in 1927

several rounds of sunday night snatch
(the click of bananagrams tiles on the table)
one round indoors
the other two on the screened in porch
adriana breaks out the pretzels
and duncan heinz frosting

what a difference
a ceiling fan makes

that this violence
in a world/time of many violences

that these violences

that it doesn’t end with the burning of
the body of a sixteen year old
that it doesn’t end

Tariq Khdeir (R) is greeted by his mother after being released from jail in Jerusalem. An Israeli judge released the 15-year-old American of Palestinian descent from jail and placed under house arrest. Khdeir was detained and beaten by Israeli police in East Jerusalem. Khdeir, from Tampa, Florida, is a cousin of Mohammed Abu Khudeir, 16, whose abduction and killing in Jerusalem sparked violent protests and calls from Palestinians for a new uprising against Israel. – voice of america, day in photos
