the subtle bursting

my body
a map of soreness
that i believe in

earth collecting under nails

how we missed you
my muscles call out
(the day-old story of hefting tree trunks
stored in them)

this mixing of sand/coir/compost
with hoe and forearms and hands
this perching to punch out soil blocks
this lifting and carting of 25pound flats
this carrying of water
while snow melts yard into mud
and light hangs a little bit longer
(signaling we’ve made it)

fingers press seed into soil
an echo of other springs
a spiraling back and
a preamble to the subtle bursting

i discover photos of
flying over tulip fields in the netherlands
and can’t believe it’s taken them this long to find me

i consider
the large/smallness of this planet
and how from one sky, rows of pantone colors (textile-like) unroll below
and how from another, the billowing, the red orange of fire, the white dust of what concrete (as in walls, as in houses, as in people and families live(d) there) becomes under the force of airborne explosives

Debris cover a street and flames rise from a building following a reported air strike by Syrian government forces during the Friday prayer in the Sukkari neighborhood of the northern city of Aleppo. – voice of america, day in photos
